Marty Supreme is Josh Safdie’s first solo feature after the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems, and A24’s most ambitious release to date. It turned a sport most people only play in basements into one of the most acclaimed films of 2025.
What is Marty Supreme about?
In New York in 1952, Marty Mauser sells shoes by day and dreams of becoming world table tennis champion and making Americans care about the sport. His hustles and schemes, from London to Tokyo, keep dragging him into trouble. Like Uncut Gems, it is a high-anxiety portrait of a charismatic man who cannot stop pushing his luck.
Is Marty Supreme a true story?
Partly. The film is loosely inspired by Marty Reisman, a real American table tennis star and hustler whose 1974 memoir, The Money Player, sparked the project. But Marty Mauser is a fictional character and the plot is invented, so it is not a biopic.
Marty Supreme cast
Timothée Chalamet leads as Marty, with Gwyneth Paltrow as Kay Stone, a retired actress and socialite. Odessa A’zion plays Rachel, Marty’s married childhood friend, and Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank plays Kay’s businessman husband. Tyler Okonma (Tyler, the Creator) is Marty’s friend Wally, director Abel Ferrara plays a criminal and Fran Drescher plays Marty’s mother.
Reviews and awards
Reviews were outstanding: 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and 89 on Metacritic. Critics praised Chalamet’s charismatic, unflattering performance and noted that the film is a critique of its hero’s toxic ambition rather than a celebration of it. Chalamet won the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actor. The film earned nine Oscar nominations and eleven BAFTA nominations, though it did not win an Oscar.
Box office
With about $192 million worldwide, it is A24’s highest-grossing film ever in the US and the UK, and it posted the best limited-release opening average since La La Land.
Where to watch Marty Supreme
It has streamed on HBO Max since April 24, 2026, and has been available on digital since February 10, 2026.
Is Marty Supreme worth watching?
Yes, if you can handle stress: it is loud, fast and deliberately exhausting, in the Uncut Gems tradition. For Chalamet fans and anyone who likes character-driven cinema, it is essential. See also our guide to Sinners, its main rival at the 2026 Oscars.
