Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid was one of the most talked-about thrillers on BookTok, and Lionsgate’s adaptation became one of the surprise hits of the 2025 holiday season, earning more than ten times its $35 million budget.

What is The Housemaid about?

Millie is on parole and desperate for a fresh start when she lands a job as a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchester family on Long Island. Her employer, Nina, is erratic and cruel; Nina’s husband Andrew seems kind. Millie soon realises the house is hiding secrets, and that she may be in danger. We will not spoil the twist here.

The Housemaid cast

Sydney Sweeney plays Millie Calloway and Amanda Seyfried plays Nina Winchester, a performance many critics called the best thing in the film. Brandon Sklenar is Andrew Winchester, Michele Morrone plays the groundskeeper Enzo and Elizabeth Perkins is Andrew’s mother, Evelyn.

What critics said

The film earned 74% on Rotten Tomatoes and 65 on Metacritic. Reviewers enjoyed it as a deliberately trashy throwback to 1990s erotic thrillers and praised Seyfried’s unsettling turn. Some critics felt the twist does less with its themes than it could, and audiences were cooler than critics, giving it a B CinemaScore. Readers of the book will find it a faithful adaptation.

Box office and sequel

It grossed about $400 million worldwide, including roughly $126 million in North America. Lionsgate quickly greenlit a sequel adapting the second novel, The Housemaid’s Secret, with Feig, Sweeney and Morrone returning and Kirsten Dunst joining the cast. It is scheduled for December 17, 2027.

Where to watch The Housemaid

It has been available to rent or buy digitally since February 3, 2026, and on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K since March 17, 2026. As a Lionsgate release, it is likely to stream on Starz in the US; check your local services.

Is The Housemaid worth watching?

Yes, if you want a twisty, glossy popcorn thriller and do not mind melodrama. Do not expect prestige filmmaking. For something tenser, try The Long Walk.
