Mortal Kombat II is the sequel to the 2021 reboot and the fourth live-action Mortal Kombat film. Its biggest selling point is finally bringing fan favourite Johnny Cage to the screen, played by Karl Urban.

What is Mortal Kombat II about?

Johnny Cage, a washed-up movie star, is recruited by Lord Raiden and Sonya Blade to fight for Earthrealm in the interdimensional Mortal Kombat tournament. With help from the Edenian princess Kitana, the fighters must stop Outworld’s tyrannical emperor, Shao Kahn.

Mortal Kombat II cast

Karl Urban plays Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph plays Kitana. Returning from the 2021 film are Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Martyn Ford plays Shao Kahn and Tati Gabrielle plays Jade.

What critics said

Reviews were mixed: 64% on Rotten Tomatoes and 46 on Metacritic, with a B CinemaScore. Many critics enjoyed its self-aware tone and called it the most fun entry in the series, with Urban clearly having a great time. The criticism is familiar for the genre: a weak story, clunky dialogue and a big-budget polish that sits oddly with deliberately cheesy material.

Box office

It grossed about $130 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, a modest result. A third film has been discussed but depends on how this one performs over time.

Where to watch Mortal Kombat II

It has been available on digital since June 9, 2026, and on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K since July 28, 2026. Warner Bros. films usually stream on HBO Max in the US a few months after release.

Is Mortal Kombat II worth watching?

For fans of the games, yes: the fights, fatalities and Johnny Cage’s one-liners deliver. If you want a strong story, skip it. For a better-reviewed action blockbuster, see our Spider-Man: Brand New Day guide.
