Superman (2025) is the first film in the new DC Universe run by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and the opening chapter of what they call Gods and Monsters. It is a full reboot, unconnected to the Henry Cavill films.
What is Superman about?
Superman is already established in Metropolis when the film begins, so there is no origin story. After he intervenes in an international conflict, a crisis engineered by billionaire Lex Luthor turns the public against him, and he has to win back people’s trust with help from Lois Lane and a team of fellow heroes.
Superman cast
David Corenswet plays Clark Kent and Superman, Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor. The film also introduces several DC heroes: Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Milly Alcock makes a cameo as Supergirl ahead of her own film.
What critics said
Reviews were mostly positive, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 83%. Critics described it as fun, colourful and refreshingly earnest, and praised Corenswet, Brosnahan and Hoult. The most common complaint was that it is overstuffed, introducing a lot of characters and setting up a whole franchise in two hours.
Box office and what comes next
It grossed about $619 million worldwide, the tenth-biggest film of 2025. The DC Universe continues with Supergirl (2026), and a direct sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled for 2027.
Where to watch Superman
Superman is streaming on HBO Max, where it had the service’s biggest movie launch since Barbie. It is also available to buy digitally and on disc.
Is Superman worth watching?
Yes, particularly if you missed the hopeful, warm version of the character. It is not as tightly plotted as the best superhero films, but it is a confident start for a new franchise. For Marvel’s latest, read our Spider-Man: Brand New Day guide.
